Laurie Caple has created the artwork for 20 books and numerous periodicals, including American Girl and Cricket. An accomplished speaker frequently invited to teach about creativity and how it relates to the written word, her presentations are fast-paced, colorful, and individually tailored for groups of any age level or ability. Available for full or half-day visits, artist-in-residence programs, and enrichment sessions to fill any need.
Sample programs include:
“Tapping into Talent”
Laurie believes every child is talented, original, and has something important to say through creative expression. Slides and sketches help her share where ideas come from, what happens when she makes a mistake, and why having the curiosity of a detective is essential. She brings along secret tools, like an elephant ear sponge, a squirrel-tail shaped brush, goopy masking fluid and even a toothbrush! Her presentations begin and end with the tender drawings only a child can create… a reminder that “talent” is in everyone around us and within each one of us too.
“The Art of Children’s Book Making”
A versatile program tailored to pique the interest of any age group, attendees join Laurie in her “studio” and through the magic of slides, look over her shoulder as they’re whisked along on the journey a manuscript takes after it hummms in fresh off the fax machine. She focuses on various elements of her picture books and delves deeply into how the black and white words of a manuscript evolve step by fascinating step into a visually compelling panorama of story-telling as the transform into a published work.
Contact Laurie directly for availability and compensation rates. She is delighted to reduce her fee by 20% for schools who follow her visit with their own Children’s Art Exhibit or other venue publicly celebrating children’s writing projects.
