Jacqueline Houtman spent much of her life in training as a scientist, earning a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology. After leaving the lab in 1996, she began a career as a freelance science writer for scientific journals, educational publishers, magazines, and nonprofits.
Jacqueline's favorite kind of writing is "sciency fiction" for kids, where accurate science is integral to the story. Her middle grade novel, The Reinvention of Edison Thomas (Front Street 2010), is a perfect example. Eddy Thomas is great at science, constantly inventing useful devices and sharing his formidable knowledge of science facts. But, like other kids on the autism spectrum, Eddy hasn't quite figured out friendship.
"...A perceptive look at a complicated mind, the novel is steeped in the world of science...and the quirky humor and authentic characters should have wide appeal."
--Publishers Weekly
The Reinvention of Edison Thomas is featured in:
- Read On Wisconsin!
- Kansas State Reading Circle
- CCBC Choices 2011
Jacqueline has speaking experience in elementary schools and international scientific conferences. She has taught in lecture halls and in more interactive formats. She is available for school and library visits and other speaking engagements, either in person, or "virtually" from her Madison, Wisconsin home.
Jacqueline will work with groups to develop the appropriate program, incorporating science literacy, autism awareness, the writing and publishing process, or a combination of these subjects.
