JoAnn Early Macken is passionate about poetry! She received the Barbara Juster Esbensen 2000 Poetry Teaching Award for helping third graders write their own poems. JoAnn earned her M.F.A. in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College. She lives in Shorewood, Wisconsin, with her husband and their two sons.

- From Cats to Moo: Inspiration, Imagination, and Publication
Suitable for all ages, including students, teachers, and community groups. This presentation lasts about 30-45 minutes. It describes the inspiration for JoAnn’s books and poems, her writing process, and her publishing experiences.
- What Makes a Poem a Poem?
Suitable for small or large groups, grade 2 and up. This presentation lasts about 45 minutes. It includes examples of wonderful poems and opportunities for students to contribute their own creative ideas.
- Write a Poem, Step by Step
Intended for class-sized groups, third grade and up. This popular writing workshop lasts from 90 minutes to two hours. Each participant writes a draft of a poem in five logical steps. The presentation includes examples of wonderful poems, many written by students in previous workshops, and allows time for writing between steps.
